Dave Stokes’ JOHNNY RECON

johnny_recon_colors

A while ago on his blog, twartist, Dave Stokes, put up a wonderful JOHNNY RECON piece. It took me a while to get it all punched up, and Mitch, JOHNNY RECON creator, to collaborate on final effects, but this is what we came up with. Tried some new things, and really had a blast. I think I could stand to color more of Dave’s stuff, what do you guys think?

JOHNNY RECON color flats

flats1

(Pencil/Inks by Mitch Gerads)

As soon as I got back from C2E2 I had to hit color flats for JOHNNY RECON, my favorite indie comic. It was such a blast to do, and it won’t be the last time Mitch and I work together, for sure.

Featured above is the line work with my colors on it, but WITHOUT Mitch’s final pass on special effects. To see the image in it’s full intended glory, you will just have to get a copy of it yourself at popgunpulp.com or at Springcon MN (which is where the comic will be sold first).

Still working to catchup from C2E2, so more news ahead after another stretch of not posting. Talk to you then!

Johann Retcon

johannretcon

My favorite Indie Comic is Johnny Recon. I rarely go a day without pondering the beauty and energy of this amazing comic. I picked up a copy from a table at ChicagoCon09 last year. Changed my life, it really did. I shocked me into realizing that I needed to be making comics, not just submission portfolios. It is a lesson I struggle to live nearly everyday.

Mitch Gerads, the artist, is on twitter. I bug him all the time, the other day I mentioned it would be funny if the character Johnny Recon had nazi twin named Johann Retcon.

The above is what happens when a stupid joke eats up your morning. Still had fun doing it, though it was done in haste.
